Research Techniques

what is quantitative questions
quantitative questions asks closed questions which are very specific and the data can be collected in a numerical formal. this data is put into statistics and the one taking the surveys and creating the data hopes for a result that is not biased. Quantitative answers are usually used for finding out who, what, when and where. we collect this data by using polls, questionnaires, and surveys.

what are qualitative questions
Qualitative questions asks open questions and collects a broad opinions as word data. The questions look for themes and describes the information and finds patterns exclusive to that set of participants, which could be applied to the whole population of either the world or a certain set of people. Qualitative data answers the 'why?' questions this is used to gain an understanding of reasons, opinions, and motivations by giving a insight into the why.

what is a demographic
the most common and traditional method of profiling a audience is known as demographics. This defines the population largely by the who they are and what they do. The NRS Social Grade breaks the population down into 6 groups, and labels them by using a letter code to describe the income and status of the members of each category, this shows what kind of lifestyle they live.

what are psychographics
Psychographics  is a way of describing an audience by looking at their behavior and personality traits otherwise known as using the psychological traits of the question taker. this way labels people and categorizes people of their habits such as what games they spend money on there is a successful psychographic profiling technique known as their Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation. this puts the audience into groups with labels that suggest their position in society

what are geodemographics
Geodemographic is based on people who live in the same or similar neighborhood are more likely to have similar characteristics than are two people chosen at random by using this you would be able to see where/what would effect people who would buy yuopur game but this wouldn't as useful as any of the other questions.

you will feedback how the research methods have been used to profile the audience, what were the pros and cons of the process and any conclusions drawn from your research.

how i have profiled the audience

To profile the audience, I surveyed an equal number of males and females as to not let it affect my results. I also did both open and closed questions as to get quick answers and more elucidated answers I went to Media city which has digital creativity, learning and leisure at its heart. To get people who were more likely to play the game and even found people who were playing the game while walking. I asked what kind of gamer they are which helped me see whether they just like this mobile game or are a full blown gamer allowing me to see whether or not those people played games or not which showed if the game was welcoming to all people. I tried to see what their incentive to play it was e.g. whether they like Pokémon, there friends play or if they're just there for the hype which helped know why they would play the game and why it took off so well. I also wanted to know how far they would go and what lengths they would walk while playing the game which allowed me to know how addictive the game was.

Pros
I found just people who played Pokémon go so that everyone could give their accurate opinion of Pokémon go. I asked the question on the team people joined but before I did I watched a video on what the teams mean about those who watched it, this was made by the game theorists and they said that valour is for more extroverts and mystic brings in more introverts.

I asked them what their favourite feature of Pokémon Go was which helped me figure out what would be useful in this type of game in case I ever made this kind of game. I asked "Are there many Poke stops or gyms near where you live?" which let me see if the Poké stops and gyms really affected the gameplay or whether or not the feel the need to play, which it did and didn’t at the same time. I wanted to know how long they played to see if there was enough to the game to keep them interested or if the new features are enough to keep them interested. Another question I asked was what they were in such as education, employment etc. And when they played so I knew when people played the game since you had to go out to play the game which helped narrow down those who play.

Cons
I only found people with the age range of 18-24 since I was too close to multiple colleges which narrowed down my results. most of the people I asked were apart of team instinct which is hard to profile from what I leaner from the game theorists. I didn’t ask enough questions since now when I look back there are more questions that I have e.g. whether they do micro transactions, what their favourite pastimes are, whether they were introverts (in door people) or extroverts (outdoor people). I feel like I asked pointless questions at the same time like were they excited before it came out because that doesn’t really help me profile them.

Conclusion
The conclusion I drew was that many people played Pokémon go for a lot of reasons and that you didn’t have to be a fan of Pokémon to like Pokémon go and you didn’t have to be a fan of Pokémon go to be a fan of Pokémon. I found out that most of the time people didn’t make themselves go outside to play the game but instead played it when they went out as a way to make walking more enjoyable for themselves.

Collate and analyse the information gathered from the digital questionnaires. What are the pros and cons of this technique and its findings?

Exercise Number 3 – Focus Groups

‘Video games are having a negative effect upon the younger generation in today’s society. Explicit sexual and violent content, bad language and the objectification of women and men is leading to worrying trends in behaviour – addiction, isolation and aggression. More regulation is required urgently to clamp down on this problem.’

Write up some notes that reflect your opinion of this statement and take them into a focus group discussion. Each member of the group will state their point of view and then it will open up as a general discussion of around 20 minutes.

Using the video of your discussion reflect on the experience and discuss what the pros and cons of this technique are.

No I don’t believe that’s the case because there haven’t been many cases. There have been cases such as 28-year-old Ryan Stone who got the two mixed up, he went and led the police on an hour long pursuit in Denver, Colorado wrecking vehicles and severely injuring a state trooper when he went on a rampage at speeds reaching 100mph. Out of the 34,212 people who have played GTA V on steam in the last 30 days, none of them have done the same. It’s not hard to tell the difference between reality and video games so you can’t really blame games for what happens but the person instead or the circumstances that have made the person. Also blaming games is impossible because off all other mass media that has been doing the same things, you see murders or even worse things in books, movies and TV but we don’t blame them for it. I do believe that some video games are having a negative effect on bad language. but I really disagree with that video games making people objectify woman because in later years when video games have been released gender equality has also improved, whether these are connected or a coincidence I don’t know. the world is becoming a lot more "PC" yet games aren’t attacked shows that the games industry is not a negative environment for men or woman. also believing that addiction and isolation is just because of games is really quite stupid, in my opinion it is the complete opposite, I blame the outside world for having such a negative effect on these people to make them want an escape.
